ROCKY MOUNT, NORTH CAROLINA 鈥 Rock the Mount is an annual tradition held each fall at 麻豆原创 to celebrate and welcome new students to campus, as well as to the local community. Each year, Rock the Mount is held the day before students鈥 first day of classes, serving as the official kick-off event for the new academic year. This semester, the event is sponsored by Southern Bank and will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 15. Business owners, churches and other nonprofits are invited to come promote their organization and gain exposure with NCWU students.

That day, hundreds of students take their rite of passage through a time-honored tradition鈥攖he Bishop Tunnel鈥攆ormed by a cheering crowd of returning students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members. As they pass through the tunnel, they are met with a warm welcome by President, Dr. Evan D. Duff and wife, Marcy. They then proceed down the Southern Bank Green, located in the center of campus, where businesses and organizations are eagerly awaiting an opportunity to help the Bishop family welcome these new students to Wesleyan, Rocky Mount and the surrounding community. Businesses and organizations are set up with tents and booth displays that decorate the street and Southern Bank Green, creating a runway for students to stop and browse their products and services.
Last year, Rock the Mount brought nearly 80 vendors to campus; this year, NC Wesleyan aims to have even more businesses and organizations on campus to make the event even more of a success. Are you the owner of a restaurant or coffee shop? Students love to eat and run on coffee! Do you have an automotive shop? Unlike many colleges and universities, NCWU allows students to bring their cars their freshman year, so they too will need oil changes and tire rotations. Are you part of a local church? Use this opportunity to connect with students looking for a local, faith-based family to join. By celebrating the start of another exciting school year with Wesleyan, you form a bond with new students who could potentially become customers, interns and even future employees. Come make a great first impression as NCWU welcomes the Class of 2027.
Local food trucks will be on-site to provide a variety of food options for everyone and live entertainment will be provided by Meredith Davis Johnson, the band 鈥淏lind Joy鈥 and DJ 3two1. Those interested in participating should bring a six-foot tablecloth鈥擭CWU will provide the table. A tent is not required, but it鈥檚 August in North Carolina so you may appreciate the shade鈥 just keep it 10鈥檟10鈥 or less. Also, giveaways are completely optional, but they are a great way to stand out from the rest and maybe even become the crowd favorite!
Participation is free, but display spaces are limited. The registration deadline is Monday, July 31; however, businesses and organizations are encouraged to sign-up as soon as possible at bit.ly/RockTheMount23. For more information, contact Elliott Smith at esmith@ncwu.edu.

NCWU Becomes an Affiliate of Bee Campus USA
ROCKY MOUNT, NORTH CAROLINA 鈥 麻豆原创 has become an affiliate of the program, designed to marshal the strengths of educational campuses for the benefit of pollinators. NCWU joins many other cities and campuses across the country united in improving their landscapes for pollinators.

鈥淗ere at Wesleyan, we strive to incorporate biodiversity throughout our campus and recognize the vital importance of bees to our environment, food supply and health,鈥 stated President Dr. Evan D. Duff. 鈥淎s we join 170 Bee Campus USA universities throughout the country, we鈥檙e proud to be 1 of only 8 universities in the entire state of North Carolina to receive this designation.鈥
According to Dr. Carl Lewis, NCWU鈥檚 Bee Campus USA Program Coordinator and Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, NCWU has created and maintained a pollinator garden for the past several years which contains three active bee hives. The concept of having bee hives on campus was the result of the work of alumna, Carolynn Davern ’18. Caitlin BrabbleRose 鈥18, along with several other founding members, helped create The B Club during their time at Wesleyan. This student organization, led by Dr. Ayra Sundbom, allows students to perform research while learning about animals and biodiversity. The 鈥淏鈥 in B Club stands for more than just bees鈥 Bees, Bats, Birds, Butterflies and Beasts.

NC Wesleyan takes pride in its commitment to minimizing hazards to pollinators by using nearly no neonicotinoids or other potentially dangerous pesticides. To raise awareness about the plight of pollinators, the University plans to publish a webpage to disseminate information to the campus and external communities including NCWU鈥檚 Integrated Pest Management Plan, a list of native plants incorporated into the campus landscape including their bloom time and habitat needs, links to student and faculty research into pollinator issues, and information about upcoming events.
Bee City USA and Bee Campus USA are initiatives of the for Invertebrate Conservation, a nonprofit organization based in Portland, Oregon, with offices across the country. Bee City USA鈥檚 mission is to galvanize communities and campuses to sustain pollinators by providing them with healthy habitat, rich in a variety of native plants, and free of pesticides. Pollinators like bumble bees, sweat bees, mason bees, honey bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, hummingbirds, and many others are responsible for the reproduction of almost ninety percent of the world’s flowering plant species and one in every three bites of food we consume.
鈥淭he program aspires to make people more PC鈥攑ollinator conscious, that is,鈥 said Scott Hoffman Black, Xerces鈥 executive director. 鈥淚f lots of individuals and communities begin planting native, pesticide-free flowering trees, shrubs and perennials, it will help to sustain many, many species of pollinators.鈥
According to Bee Campus USA coordinator Laura Rost, 鈥淗ow each city or campus completes the steps to conserve pollinators is up to them. Affiliates play to their own strengths, designing pesticide reduction plans, improving habitat, and holding events ranging from garden tours to native plant giveaways to bee trivia nights. Each campus must renew their affiliation each year and report on accomplishments from the previous year. Other institutions of higher education are invited to explore completing the application process outlined at beecityusa.org.鈥

There were 34 international students from 17 different countries: Argentina, Australia, China, Ecuador, France, Italy, Liberia, Uganda, Venezuela, Israel, Martinique, Mongolia, Philippines, Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Senegal and Turkmenistan. University Chaplain, Rev. Edwin Ferguson, gave the invocation, followed by a performance of the Star-Spangled Banner by alumna, Ms. Latisha Scott 鈥06.
President Dr. Evan D. Duff welcomed the crowd to the momentous occasion and congratulated the graduates on their accomplishments noting, 鈥測our degree is provided by an institution which seeks not only to dispense knowledge and develop the habits for lifelong learning, but also expects its graduates to be responsible citizens, contributors to the common good and individuals who care about others. As we celebrate together, we acknowledge the obligations all of us have to help bring about a better world.鈥
The commencement address was given by Renee Chou, news anchor and reporter for WRAL-TV. Chou is a three-time, Emmy Award-winning anchor and reporter who joined in October 2004 as a general assignment reporter. Over the years, she has served as the weekend morning anchor and weekend evening anchor. Chou was promoted to weekday morning anchor in March of 2014.

Chou addressed the graduates stating, 鈥測our drive and hard work has set you on a path to success and a lifelong journey of learning. There are graduates here who understand how quickly the years go by, who have decades under their belt鈥hey are proof it鈥檚 never too late to set a goal and conquer it. I say to you, you are an inspiration and the definition of what is possible when you put in the work鈥our investment in higher education will shape you, transform you and set you on a trajectory.鈥
She went on to offer the Class of 2023 five truths that have helped her on her journey. First: trust that the no鈥檚 will lead to a yes. Second: you can do anything, but you can鈥檛 do everything. Third: everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Fourth: pay attention to who shows up for you unconditionally. And fifth: 鈥渏ust think, you鈥檙e not even the best version of yourself yet. It鈥檚 comforting to know; the best days of your life are still ahead.鈥
Chou ended with words of wisdom and hope urging graduates, 鈥渄on鈥檛 let others write your story. YOU are the author, the journalist of your own story. Your story is still being written and the world can鈥檛 wait to learn about it. Class of 2023, go shine your light!鈥

NCWU鈥檚 First Faculty Member of Color Earns Jefferson-Pilot Award
麻豆原创 Professor, Dr. Patricia Brewer, has been awarded with the 2023-2024 Jefferson-Pilot Professorship. This award is the highest and most singular honor that can be bestowed upon a faculty member and is given in recognition of scholarship, teaching and community service.

The Jefferson-Pilot Professorship is an endowed award that was established in 1981 through the generosity of the Jefferson-Pilot Life Insurance Company. The honoree is nominated by a committee of faculty and appointed by NC Wesleyan President, Dr. Evan D. Duff. To be eligible for consideration, the faculty member must have tenure and have clearly distinguished themselves with high standards of excellence. As teachers, they demonstrate a whole-hearted dedication and rigorous professionalism in forwarding their students鈥 learning and personal development for life and work. As scholars, they have to possess a mastery of their discipline, contribute to new understanding and knowledge, and demonstrate a lively commitment to life-long learning for themselves, as well as their students. Additionally, as a member of the Wesleyan community, they give generously to the aims and programs of the University, both with their time and means.
鈥淚鈥檝e always found Dr. Brewer to be a strong advocate for exceptional learners,鈥 stated Dr. Evan D. Duff. 鈥淪he鈥檚 worked tirelessly in the classroom and the community to make a difference in the lives of others.鈥
Dr. Brewer, now in her nineteenth year at Wesleyan, delivered her Jefferson-Pilot Professorship Lecture, entitled: “Transformative Teaching: The Who, What, Why and How Service-Learning Pedagogy Impacts Culturally Diverse Populations” on Thursday, April 20. Her lecture explored experiential learning that most impacts students’ success.
Dr. Brewer is an associate professor of education and coordinator of the special education program. She earned a B.S. in elementary education and an M.A. in special education, both from NC Central University; an M.Ed. (educational leadership) at East Carolina University; and a Ph.D. (special education administration) from Southern Illinois University. She founded the Students Helping Students Afterschool Program Initiative with the Association for the Learning Disabled and Handicapped (ALDH) in February 2015. The initiative was in response to an outcry for additional, intensive services for special needs children in Nash/Rocky Mount schools, grades K-12. All NCWU pre-service students contribute through the required course Special Education 300: Introduction to Exceptional Children. They work once a week for two hours at Wesleyan over a 10-week period. The program allows NC Wesleyan鈥檚 education students to put theory into practice in real-life experiences, such as identifying and evaluating student needs, analyzing and interpreting data for instruction, providing research-based learning strategies, and collaborating with parents.

ROCKY MOUNT, NORTH CAROLINA 鈥 麻豆原创鈥檚 faculty approved a new graduate program in strategic leadership. The Master of Science in Strategic Leadership (MSSL) is a 30-hour graduate degree comprised of 10 courses. ROCKY MOUNT, NORTH CAROLINA 鈥 麻豆原创 is one of only 149 universities and colleges around the world to be honored by for its efforts to create a culture of wellness on campus. Through personal training offered to faculty and staff, Wesleyan Wellness initiatives, Lunch and Learn Series on Health and physical activity events conducted by their Health and Movement Science Club, NCWU earned silver level designation from the Exercise is Medicine庐 On Campus (EIM-OC) program.

鈥淲e are thrilled to recognize these campuses鈥 commitment to make movement a part of daily campus culture and give students the tools to cultivate physical activity habits that will benefit them throughout their lives,鈥 said Robyn Stuhr, Vice President of Exercise is Medicine. 鈥淭hese campus programs are nurturing future leaders who will advance a key tenet of Exercise is Medicine: making physical activity assessment and promotion a standard in health care.鈥
鈥淲e are excited to have received the EIM-OC Silver distinction for the fourth year in a row! This was made possible by the collaborative efforts of our students, faculty, staff and administration, who continue to promote the importance of physical activity and health on campus,鈥 said Dr. Shannon Crowley, Associate Professor of Exercise Science and Exercise is Medicine on Campus庐 Program Advisor.
Of the 149 campuses recognized this year, 73 received gold, 55 silver and 21 bronze. NCWU Students Take Action on Mental Health
ROCKY MOUNT, NORTH CAROLINA 鈥 Four international students at 麻豆原创 have teamed up to develop a course and textbook that promotes mental well-being among their peers. The Wesleyan Mindset鈥 Inner Journey Journal is the brainchild of former student-athletes Gregor Baum (Germany) and Harjot 鈥淗ardy鈥 Singh (New Zealand), with help from sisters Candela Conde Latini and Delfina Conde Latini (Argentina) on design and layout. Both Gregor and Harjot independently took the initiative to create this resource, not as a required class project, completing it in a few short months during the fall 2022 semester.
The two left their home countries to attend NC Wesleyan to grow, learn and succeed. They quickly formed a strong bond over their shared experiences as student-athletes who endured severe injuries which altered their journeys. Gregor was injured during his first week of practice on the Battling Bishops tennis team and Hardy just after his first week of starting at his dream high school. Both faced very tough periods of being hurt, far from home and unprecedented challenges. Each thought their dreams and identities had been crushed. Through perseverance and learning, they both found new passions in leadership, public speaking and service towards others鈥 skillsets they want to share with others in similar situations.
鈥淚 was so excited to complete this project that I couldn鈥檛 sleep. Hardy and I spent so many late nights in the library to make this journal a reality,鈥 stated Gregor. 鈥淚 hope that other students will greatly benefit from taking this inward journey. I鈥檓 a firm believer in the American dream. If you work hard, align yourself with the right people and remain optimistic, doors will open for you.鈥
Every Tuesday night from March 14 until April 18, Gregor and Candela will coach NCWU students through the Wesleyan Mindset鈥 Inner Journey Journal, having them explore areas of self-reflection, energy sources, gratitude, adversity and success. With the goal of leaving their University in a better place than they found it, Gregor and Hardy developed the journal they wish they had when transitioning to college. The tools and strategies it presents helps students find the inner hero among themselves.
鈥淭he Wesleyan Mindset journal provides introspection from a student鈥檚 point of view for establishing a successful mindset to combat the struggles that many students encounter on their life鈥檚 journey,鈥 stated President Dr. Evan D. Duff.

This project demonstrates the benefit of a small, close-knit university. These students came up with a practical way to serve their fellow Bishops and pitched it to the President. Now, they have an opportunity to implement this as a pilot course and potentially turn it into a one-credit hour class in the future. The pilot course will be offered as part of the University鈥檚 Practical Skills Academy (PSA), which offers life and professional skills to students in areas not typically covered in traditional coursework.
鈥淚 was excited when Gregor and Harjot reached out to me about their Mindset Journal. We talked about what motivated them to write this journal and it was clear that we share the same goal, which is to help students transition to college life,鈥 stated Taylor Stone, Director of Student Success. 鈥淲e agreed to pilot the journal in the spring sessions of COL 103: Wesleyan Transition. At the start of the course, students were given the journal and Gregor visited the class sessions to introduce himself and share the vision. Students are working through the journals now at their own pace and the COL 103 instructors offer students opportunities to share their growth in class discussions and writings. We look forward to hearing how the Mindset Journal impacted these students and hopefully using the journals in future COL 103 sessions.鈥
