NCWU Student to Win New Car, Courtesy of Joey Griffin Kia

ROCKY MOUNT, NORTH CAROLINA 鈥 麻豆原创 has partnered with Joey Griffin Kia of Rocky Mount to give a current NCWU student the deal of a lifetime at this year鈥檚 Homecoming football game on November 5. One lucky and deserving Bishop will be the owner of a brand new 2022 Kia Rio courtesy of Joey Griffin Kia.

NCWU students, faculty and staff have from September 1 until November 2 to nominate a current, full-time student they believe deserves and needs a new car. Students are not allowed to self-nominate, but a student can be nominated more than once. Students will be notified of their nomination and confirm that they would like to be in the drawing.

鈥淭he Joey Griffin Deal of a Lifetime is more than just giving away a car, it鈥檚 giving a student opportunities鈥 an opportunity to get an off-campus job, an internship that could jumpstart their career, and the freedom to enjoy and explore Rocky Mount, along with surrounding areas,鈥 stated Elliott Smith, Director of Student Activities.

NC Wesleyan is unique in that it allows freshmen to have vehicles on campus their first year; however, nearly fifty percent of students do not, whether it鈥檚 due to financial reasons, distance from home, or other factors. The Joey Griffin Deal of a Lifetime will enhance an NCWU student鈥檚 life by providing them with safe, reliable transportation.

鈥淭he community has supported us greatly, so this is a chance to give back and maybe change someone鈥檚 life,鈥 stated Griffin. 鈥淭hrough this, maybe somebody will become aware of our dealership. This gives our salespeople a chance to sell them a car or a technician the opportunity to service their car, hence helping them support their families.鈥

They will receive the keys to their new Kia the following day, November 5, during halftime of this year’s Homecoming football game. underscored the racial, socioeconomic, recreational and political realities of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the African-American community, Negro League Baseball represented achievement, success, ingenuity, self-empowerment and perseverance. The leagues raised black consciousness and they were a catalyst for change. The stories of the games and the African-American and Latino players were chronicled in historically black publications, such as the Chicago Defender, Pittsburgh Courier and New York Amsterdam News. The teams barnstormed their way through U.S. cities and towns, the Caribbean and Canada, enthralling fans. Some athletes traveled overseas to play in Japan, as well. Wherever the players took to the field, they were building a legacy and creating history.

In December 2020, Major League Baseball (MLB) officially recognized the Negro League as Major Leaguers. All 3,400 players from 1920 to 1948 were elevated to MLB status鈥100 years after the start of the Negro League. The pronouncement is significant for a group of legends who broke new ground and paved the way for future generations.
