On Saturday, May 2025, 麻豆原创 held its annual commencement ceremony at the . The University celebrated over 360 graduates, marking its 85th graduation.
The event was open to graduates, faculty, the platform party and guests of graduates where over 2000 were in attendance. University Chaplain, Rev. Edwin Ferguson, gave the invocation, followed by a performance of the Star-Spangled Banner by alumna, Ms. Latisha Scott 鈥06.
President Dr. Evan D. Duff welcomed the crowd to the momentous occasion and congratulated the graduates on their accomplishments noting, 鈥淵our degree is provided by an institution which seeks not only to dispense knowledge and develop the habits for lifelong learning, but also expects its graduates to be responsible citizens, contributors to the common good and individuals who care about others. As we celebrate together, we acknowledge the obligations all of us have to help bring about a better world.鈥
Commencement Keynote Speaker
The commencement address was given by Mr. Danijel Velicki, Entrepreneur, Financial Educator, and Founder of Opus Wealth Strategies and . Originally from Zagreb, Croatia, Velicki immigrated to the United States in 1995 with just $40 to his name. He worked tirelessly to fund his education, earning a bachelor鈥檚 degree in marketing and finance from Fairmont State University. Today, Velicki is a thriving business owner and is pursuing a graduate degree in Innovation and Strategy at Oxford University鈥檚 Sa茂d Business School.
Through his financial education platform, , Velicki aims to empower individuals and families with the tools they need to achieve financial stability and success. The platform offers online lessons and personalized support to help users develop smart spending habits and make informed financial decisions for to support a prosperous life. Velicki鈥檚 philosophy is deeply rooted in his belief that the 鈥淎merican Dream鈥 is attainable for everyone with the right support and determination.
Velicki addressed the graduates stating, 鈥淪uccess is not about comfort. Growth does not happen when you play it safe. The secret to success is passion, conviction, and discipline. Don鈥檛 be a gray speck on the wall. If you walk into a room, be heard, be seen, and be remembered. And most importantly, ASK! Most people are afraid to ask, but here鈥檚 what I know for certain 鈥 鈥榶ou miss 100% of the shots you don鈥檛 take鈥 as Michael Jordan once said.鈥
He went on to offer the Class of 2025 three key relationships for a lifetime of growth: a mentor, a peer, and a mentee. A mentor is someone who has walked the path before you. A peer is someone who grows with you, challenges you, pushes you and celebrates with you. A mentee is someone you help lift up because the best way to learn is to teach.
Velicki ended with 鈥淵our life is a blank canvas. You may be the first in your family to earn a degree. You may have changed careers to get here. You may have doubted whether you鈥檇 even make it to this moment. But here you are. Be bold in your dreams. Be relentless in your pursuits. Be kind in your interactions. The world is waiting for the unique imprint that each of you will leave- and I have no doubt it will be extraordinary鈥.
Students and Teacher Awards
After Velicki鈥檚 inspiring speech, Dr. Lane, Provost and Sr. Vice President of Academic Affairs, presented the Exemplary Teacher Award to Dr. Doreen Thierauf, Associate Professor of English. This award recognizes excellence in teaching and promotion of student learning, civility and concern for students and colleagues, commitment to value-centered education, service to students beyond the classroom and service to the larger community beyond campus. During her eight years on our faculty, Dr. Thierauf has published more than a dozen articles, edited volume chapters, and reviews, and she averages more than four publications and more than four newly presented talks or papers each and every year. She further creates a dynamic and energized classroom space in which students are invited to share their own thoughts and feelings on some of the most challenging concepts you can possibly discuss, and in spite of, or perhaps because of, the heavy subjects that Dr. Thierauf asks to students to reflect on, her students routinely rise to the occasion.
Andrea Belen Rizzo received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, which honors a senior who best exemplifies excellence in character, leadership, service to the community and a commitment to spiritual values. This humanitarian award is meant to recognize those who have selflessly given to others or served others in some way. The recipient is chosen by the Honors Awards Committee.
Ms. Rizzo is a Biology and Environmental Science graduate from Argentina who has distinguished herself on the Wesleyan campus and in the community by her leadership of the Worldwide Welcome Team for international students at North Carolina Wesleyan and is a member of S.E.A.T., Science Club, NSLS, Phi Beta Sigma Honor Society, President of IBA, id on the President鈥檚 Honors List, and both Homecoming Princess and Queen. She will be continuing her education at Texas A&M as she was recently accepted into their Ph.D. Marine Biology program.
The President鈥檚 Cup Award was presented to Anna Elizabeth Ray, a senior who best exhibits those characteristics considered most desirable in a graduate. Of particular importance is the attainment of the highest standards of academic performance as demonstrated by the overall grade point average at 麻豆原创. The recipient is also chosen by the Honors Awards Committee.
Ms. Ray is from Richlands, North Carolina. She graduated with a major in Psychology, and was a member of the Cross-Country Team. She became an active student leader, serving as a member of S.E.A.T. and a Resident Advisor. Graduating with honors, she plans to pursue a master鈥檚 degree in Human Resource Management.
Upon the recommendation of the Honorary Degree Committee and the approval of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Danijel Velicki was honored with the degree of Doctor of Humanities Honorary Degree from NC Wesleyan University.
Clemmons Family Honored
This commencement ceremony was especially moving as Wesleyan honored Matthew Clemmons, who passed away September of 2021, with a Posthumous Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology. Matthew was a student-athlete and part of the NCWU football team. He was on the Dean鈥檚 List and was soon to be inducted into the Student Leadership Society. Twelve of his family members, friends, and former coach were in attendance to receive the degree in his memory.

NCWU Recognizes Outstanding Employees at 2025 Awards Ceremony
麻豆原创 recently held its 2025 Annual Employee Awards and Recognition Ceremony on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. The University鈥檚 Employee Awards ceremony provides recognition to coaches, faculty and staff for their years of service to the University and for exemplary service to the campus and community. Wesleyan Service Awards
Recipients of the Wesleyan Service Award were Hunter Pulliam and Darnell Lawrence. These employees demonstrated outstanding service to the campus and/or community that was above and beyond their job responsibilities.
Hunter assisted in a Ward 7 鈥淔un Day鈥 on campus. His nominee communicated his passion and service to the community and making the event a special day for all involved. He was recognized for being a team player who assisted with transporting, handing out materials, and going above and beyond.
Darnell was recognized for going above and beyond supervising custodians, but also helping with maintenance and grounds crew. He is often found on campus outside of his working hours ensuring that campus is in the best condition it can be in for campus guests and visitors to experience.
Jefferson-Pilot Professorship Award
This year鈥檚 Jefferson-Pilot Professorship Award winner was Dr. Gail Marsal who presented her Lecture on April 10th. Regarded as one of the highest honors and form of recognition a faculty member may receive, this award is designed for the faculty members scholarly contributions to their students, the campus, and their professional field of study. Nominations are made by Faculty Council and a grant is made available to the recipient for professional development.
Distinguished Staff Award
The Distinguished Staff Award was presented to Allen Meszaros, Network Administrator. This award is designed to honor those staff members who have exhibited outstanding work performance and/or service and dedication to the University or the community. Examples include, but are not limited to, outstanding program development, positive attitude in relationships with faculty, staff and students, noteworthy achievement or exemplary leadership on the campus or in the community.
Leah Hill and Dr. Daniel Elias were both presented with the Inspirational Award honoring employees who exemplify a positive attitude and demeanor that is inspirational to students, faculty, staff, and the greater campus community. These people make an extraordinary effort to support others whose efforts improve morale and positively impacts students, faculty, and staff as well as demonstrate the University鈥檚 core values.
Chuck Taylor Leadership Award
The Chuck Taylor Leadership Award was given to Elliott Smith, Director of Student Engagement. This award is presented to employees who demonstrate and live the following: Principles of servant leadership; Building community by promoting a work environment that is respectful, collegial and supportive; Orienting goals and achievements in line with the University鈥檚 mission; Exhibiting strong stewardship of institutional resources (time, talent, financial); Developing a shared vision of institutional excellence; fosters an atmosphere of collaboration and creativity, which contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of productivity. This individual is also an effective leader of people.
Longevity Awards were also given to various full-time and part-time employees for their years of service. Recognition was awarded in 5-year, 10-year, 15-year, etc. increments of service to the University for the contractual or fiscal year.

NCWU Hosts Omnium Conference
麻豆原创 (NCWU) held its inaugural Omnium Conference on Wednesday, April 9 at the Gateway Technology Center on campus. The event spotlighted undergraduate research and celebrated scholarly achievement across disciplines.
The Omnium Conference is a formal presentation of student research papers in affiliation with . Omnium is a Latin word meaning 鈥渆verything鈥, and the journal provides students with the opportunity to explore major genres of academic writing, join in scholarly conversations, share their ideas, perform original research, and see their work published in a professional venue. Now in its sixth volume, Omnium was established in 2019 by Dr. Doreen Thierauf, Associate Professor of English and General Education Program Coordinator. Dr. Thierauf serves as the journal鈥檚 sole editor and Dr. Shane Thompson, Assistant Professor of Bible and the Ancient Near East, is a co-founder of the conference which is poised to become an annual event.
鈥Omnium provides a professional platform for students to engage in original research, participate in academic dialogue, and see their work published,鈥 said Dr. Thierauf. 鈥淚t also serves as a teaching tool for faculty at NCWU and other institutions, with articles reflecting the academic growth of students at every stage of their college careers from first-year composition essays to projects created in senior seminars and honors theses鈥.

This year鈥檚 keynote address was delivered by Dr. Shannon Crowley, Associate Professor of Public Health and Director of Public Health Program. Her presentation explored the psychological and physiological impacts of movement and exercise.
The 2025 conference marked a new collaboration between Dr. Thierauf and Dr. Shane Thompson, Director of the Office of Undergraduate Research. Together, they aim to expand mission to highlight the exceptional work being produced by NCWU undergraduates across all disciplines.
The Spring 2025 conference also served as a proof-of-concept for future interdisciplinary research showcases, reinforcing NCWU鈥檚 ongoing commitment to undergraduate academic excellence.
NCWU Celebrates 10th Anniversary of an Award-Winning Afterschool Program
麻豆原创 (NCWU) hosted a special celebration on Saturday, March 29, to mark the 10th Anniversary of its Award-Winning Afterschool Program. The event, held on the Southern Bank Green at the heart of campus, brought together community members, faculty, students, and program supporters to recognize a decade of impact in education.
The celebration featured an invocation, greetings, and reflections from esteemed speakers, including Deon Bailey, Joylette Whitaker, Dr. Chad Ross, Sarah Turner, Dr. Patricia Brewer, and Dr. Kelvin Spragley. In addition to the esteemed speakers were testimonials from the students and their parents, covering their challenges and successes in the program. Attendees also enjoyed games, activities, and a parade to conclude the event.
The Afterschool Tutorial Initiative was launched in February 2015 through NCWU鈥檚 Teacher Education Program in collaboration with the . The initiative was created in response to the growing need for intensive, specialized services for K-12 students with learning differences. Through strong partnerships with parents, Nash and Edgecombe County Schools, and ALDH, the program quickly became a vital resource for students and their families.
Over the years, the program has evolved into an integrated clinical lab, utilizing research-based practices in math and reading. NCWU students enrolled in the Introduction to Exceptional Children (SPE 300) course work directly with K-12 students, providing individualized training and resources to enhance learning outcomes. These pre-service educators gain valuable experience by applying social learning strategies, tracking progress, conducting parent-student conferences, and developing accommodations tailored to each child鈥檚 educational plan.
Dr. Patricia Brewer, Executive Director of the Afterschool Program, plays a crucial role in coordinating instruction and providing advocacy training for parents. These advocacy sessions equip families with tools and strategies to support their children鈥檚 academic success, including simulated parent conferences and specialized training modules.
Since its inception, the program has celebrated numerous student achievements. Two high school graduates have already launched successful career paths鈥攐ne securing employment at Amazon in Cary, N.C., and another completing welding training at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro, N.C. Additionally, many participating students have earned local, state, and national recognition for their academic, social, and emotional growth. In April 2024, the Award-Winning Program was featured in the national newspaper Education Week, addressing educator preparation programs on parent and family engagement.
The Afterschool Program was designated as an award-winning initiative by the National Education Association and the NC Student Association of Educators in 2016. Over the past decade, 31 students have participated in the program, with seven publications showcasing its impact.

NCWU鈥檚 Dr. Tim Dornemann Expands Global Impact in Sports Science Education

Dr. Tim Dornemann, Ed.D., CES, PES, CSCS, CPSS OS Pro., Associate Professor of Exercise Science and Director of the MS-HSPSS Program, exemplifies this commitment through his international contributions to sports science education.
While preparing to launch NCWU鈥檚 new Master of Science in Human Performance & Sports Science (MS-HSPSS) Program in Fall 2025, Dr. Dornemann is currently sharing his knowledge in India . He spent a few days at the , a premier institution dedicated to advancing sports education. During his time there, he co-hosted clinics engaging 400 participants. He then led a specialized clinic for in Kolkata, reaching an additional 200 in-person attendees, as well as online participants from across the country.
These global initiatives often serve as the foundation for future dual enrollment opportunities between N.C. Wesleyan and international institutions, fostering cross-cultural learning and collaboration. Dr. Dornemann鈥 s dedication to global engagement is further demonstrated though his recent work worldwide. Last summer, he joined The Board of Directors for The Christian Society of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies (CSKLS) in Longview , conducted both a corrective exercise clinic at and a strength and exercise workshop in the Philippines, and worked with athletes and soccer coaches at N.C. Wesleyan is proud of Dr. Dornemann鈥 s contributions to the field of sports science and his efforts to expand the university鈥檚 global reach. His work reinforces the university鈥檚 commitment to academic excellence and international collaboration.

Wesleyan Record Label Announces New Releases
301 North Records, the record label of 麻豆原创, is proud to announce two exciting new releases from its talented artists.
Raleigh-based Indie Rock band, Soul Chatter, unveiled their latest single, 鈥淥ctober Blue鈥, on December 27, 2024. This marks the group鈥檚 second release with the label. The single, characterized by its captivating melodies and introspective lyrics, is now available on all major streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music.
鈥淥ctober Blue鈥 was shaped by the expertise of Tony Sawyer, Assistant Professor of Music Production at 麻豆原创. As the mixing and mastering engineer for this release, Sawyer played an integral role in bringing the artists鈥 creative visions to life. Additionally, he played the drums, keys, and bass for the song.
NCWU alumnus Will Plyler 鈥21 followed with his highly anticipated album, 鈥淗ymns for Jane鈥, released on January 12, 2025. This 12-song collection is Plyler鈥檚 second full-length album with 301 North Records and showcases his unique blend of heartfelt storytelling and innovative soundscapes. The album is also available on all major streaming platforms.

NCWU Announces New Prelicensure BSN Program
麻豆原创 (NCWU) is proud to announce the expansion of its Nursing Program with the addition of a Prelicensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. This comprehensive four-year program is set to welcome its first cohort of students in August 2025, with applications being accepted from February 1 to May 1, 2025. Admission decisions will be finalized by June 1, paving the way for selected students to begin in the fall semester.
The new 4-year program is designed to provide a seamless educational pathway for aspiring nurses. Freshman and sophomore years will focus on completing prerequisites and general education requirements. Students will then apply for admission to the nursing program at the end of their sophomore year. Upon acceptance, students will dedicate their junior and senior years to nursing-specific coursework and clinical experiences. Transfer students are also welcome to apply, with the flexibility to complete prerequisite courses at other institutions before transferring to NCWU.
Wesleyan鈥檚 current RN-to-BSN program is nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and the university intends to seek accreditation for the new prelicensure program as well. Entirely donor-funded through partnerships with local and state organizations, the program reflects a strong investment from the surrounding community in its success.
Leading the initiative are Dr. Crystal Ostheim, DNP, RN, FNP-BC, BP-C, CNE, Director of Nursing Programs, and Dr. Lesley Gillian McGraw, DNP, RN, CNE, Prelicensure BSN Program Director. Additionally, two experienced nursing educators will join the team starting February 1, further bolstering the program’s academic and clinical expertise.
The new nursing program will utilize NCWU’s state-of-the-art simulation and skills lab, featuring high-fidelity and medium-fidelity simulation manikins, task trainers, and a mock hospital room. These facilities are designed to provide students with hands-on learning experiences in a realistic clinical environment. The program also boasts advanced classroom technology, group study rooms, and flexible lab access for students who wish to hone their skills further. To enhance clinical simulation experiences, the program will incorporate cutting-edge reality and AI technology.
Grounded in creativity and innovation, NCWU’s Prelicensure BSN program is tailored to accommodate diverse learning styles, making the educational experience both engaging and realistic.

NCWU Graphic Designer Inspires at Career Fest
麻豆原创鈥檚 own graphic designer, Judie Taylor, recently shared her exciting journey with students at 鈥檚 Career Fest. Her story鈥攁 mix of creativity, perseverance, and adaptability鈥攐ffered a window into the world of design and was packed with inspiring takeaways for students just beginning to imagine their own career paths.
From the beginning, Judie was captivated by art. She made her first mark at , where she helped create and edit her school鈥檚 yearbook. This early role sparked her interest in design, setting her on a path that would eventually lead her across the country鈥攁nd back again. Judie honed her skills at in their Advertising and Graphic Design Program, where she even designed the school鈥檚 beloved NightHawk mascot that endures to this day.
Driven to expand her artistry, Judie continued her education at the prestigious in Georgia. There, she added a minor in Film and Television, diving into creative storytelling and further cultivating her love for design. After graduating, she took her skills to the bustling world of New York City, where she joined . In this role, she brought her artistic vision to iconic children鈥檚 brands like , and OshKosh B鈥橤osh. But as the pandemic unfolded, family and the familiarity of North Carolina called her back. Today, Judie is the Graphic Designer for 麻豆原创, where her work influences everything from social media graphics to major event marketing.
When asked what she loves most about her career, Judie didn鈥檛 hesitate: 鈥淚 think what I love most is the variety and the impact. One day, I might be working on a magazine or a billboard, and the next, designing materials for a campus event. Each project is unique and lets me be creative while also working with a team. Seeing something I helped create go public and resonate with people is an amazing feeling.鈥
At the Career Fest, Judie emphasized the importance of learning to take feedback in stride鈥攁 skill essential in any artistic career. 鈥淎rt is subjective, and not everyone will love what you create right away,鈥 she shared. 鈥淭hat doesn鈥檛 mean you鈥檝e done something wrong.
