麻豆原创 (NCWU) is proud to highlight the inspiring journey of Jill Griffith, a Master of Science in Strategic Leadership (MSSL) student who discovered Wesleyan more than 2,500 miles away in California.
Jill, who works in Strategy and Transformation division as a Sales Leader, sought to deepen her leadership skills with a structured and formal graduate program. With support from 笔别辫蝉颈颁辞鈥檚 education reimbursement program, she began researching accredited, affordable, and career-aligned master鈥檚 degrees. Her search led to a Forbes article highlighting top accredited graduate programs, where NC Wesleyan鈥檚 MSSL program stood out.
鈥淭he course outline and program requirements were accessible, and the online resources gave me a confidence that the MSSL program matched both my interests and professional needs,鈥 Griffith shared. 鈥淲hat truly made the experience personal was the exceptional support I received from Jennifer Phipps, Admissions and Advising Coordinator, who made the admissions process smooth and welcoming.鈥
While on a business trip to Winston-Salem, Jill made the three-hour drive to Rocky Mount to see NC Wesleyan鈥檚 main campus in person. She met with faculty, including University President and MSSL professor Dr. Evan Duff, and was welcomed by several staff members with personalized hospitality from parking instructions and workspace accommodations to a guided campus tour.
鈥淚 had seen photos of the campus online, but visiting in person was such a pleasant surprise,鈥 said Griffith. 鈥淭he historic buildings were beautifully maintained, and the welcoming atmosphere was evident from banners promoting patience, accountability, and respect, to spaces like volleyball courts and hammocks. I simply felt like this was my school.鈥
Since beginning the program, Jill has completed eight courses and already sees a direct impact on her work with PepsiCo. The MSSL program has provided her with new tools to communicate strategy, improve execution, and inspire collaborative problem-solving.
鈥淲ith my experience at , the program gave me a framework to better understand the building blocks of strategy and its evolving role in driving success,鈥 she explained. 鈥淪ome of the most exciting insights came from case studies and real-world examples that gave me the language to move ideas forward with greater impact.鈥
Griffith also values the broader ripple effect of online learning: 鈥淲hether it鈥檚 your partner, kids, friends, or colleagues, the excitement from learning often sparks meaningful conversations beyond the classroom. NCWU Hosts Omnium Conference
麻豆原创 (NCWU) held its inaugural Omnium Conference on Wednesday, April 9 at the Gateway Technology Center on campus. The event spotlighted undergraduate research and celebrated scholarly achievement across disciplines.
The Omnium Conference is a formal presentation of student research papers in affiliation with . Omnium is a Latin word meaning 鈥渆verything鈥, and the journal provides students with the opportunity to explore major genres of academic writing, join in scholarly conversations, share their ideas, perform original research, and see their work published in a professional venue. Now in its sixth volume, Omnium was established in 2019 by Dr. Doreen Thierauf, Associate Professor of English and General Education Program Coordinator. Dr. Thierauf serves as the journal鈥檚 sole editor and Dr. Shane Thompson, Assistant Professor of Bible and the Ancient Near East, is a co-founder of the conference which is poised to become an annual event.
鈥Omnium provides a professional platform for students to engage in original research, participate in academic dialogue, and see their work published,鈥 said Dr. Thierauf. 鈥淚t also serves as a teaching tool for faculty at NCWU and other institutions, with articles reflecting the academic growth of students at every stage of their college careers from first-year composition essays to projects created in senior seminars and honors theses鈥.
The 2025 conference featured nine student presentations, organized into three thematic sessions followed by interactive panel discussions:

This year鈥檚 keynote address was delivered by Dr. Shannon Crowley, Associate Professor of Public Health and Director of Public Health Program. Her presentation explored the psychological and physiological impacts of movement and exercise.
The 2025 conference marked a new collaboration between Dr. Thierauf and Dr. Shane Thompson, Director of the Office of Undergraduate Research. Together, they aim to expand mission to highlight the exceptional work being produced by NCWU undergraduates across all disciplines.
The Spring 2025 conference also served as a proof-of-concept for future interdisciplinary research showcases, reinforcing NCWU鈥檚 ongoing commitment to undergraduate academic excellence.
University Celebrates 2025 Honors Convocation
Rocky Mount, NC聽鈥 April 3, 2025 鈥 麻豆原创 proudly hosted its annual Honors Convocation, celebrating the exceptional achievements of its students. The event, held at the Dunn Center for the Performing Arts, recognized students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, academic excellence, community service, and contributions to the university.
The ceremony included the presentation of various awards from each school within the university:
- School of Math and Sciences:聽Awards for outstanding achievements in disciplines such as Biology, Chemistry, Exercise Science, Environmental Science, Public Health, and Mathematics.
- School of Business:聽Recognized excellence in fields like Accounting, Marketing, Computer Information Systems, and Organizational and Sports Administration.
- School of Education and Social Sciences :聽Honored students who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and skill in teaching, educational leadership, History, Political Science, Psychology and Criminal Justice.
- School of Humanities: Awards for outstanding achievements in disciplines such as Writing, Religious Studies, English and more.
Students were selected for these prestigious honors by a panel of faculty and staff, based on their leadership, academic achievement, community service, contributions to the university, and good citizenship. There is no doubt that these students will go on to accomplish great things.
Provost Dr. Joe Lane expressed his pride in the students’ accomplishments, stating, “Our awardees and honor society members have displayed outstanding contributions both inside and outside the classroom. Their dedication and hard work are truly commendable, and we are confident that they will continue to excel in their future endeavors.”

Wesleyan Hosts GLF Scholarship Luncheon
麻豆原创 (NCWU) proudly hosted the Annual Luncheon on March 13 at The Dunn Center, celebrating the strong partnership between the two institutions. The event honored both past scholarship graduates and new recipients, highlighting the impact of the Golden LEAF Foundation (GLF) on student success.
The luncheon opened with a warm welcome from Mark Hinson, NCWU鈥檚 Vice President of Advancement, who expressed gratitude for the Foundation鈥檚 continued support. He emphasized the significant role GLF plays in providing educational opportunities for NCWU students and strengthening the university鈥檚 mission.
Alumni Speaker and NCWU graduate, Nadia Simmons, reflected on her time at Wesleyan, sharing how her experience was profoundly shaped by the scholarship. During her time as a student, she interned with GLF鈥攁n opportunity that led to her current role post-graduation. She credited the Foundation not only for her academic success but also for the meaningful relationships and shared values it fostered among students from small towns who aspire to make a big impact.
Leah Hill, NCWU鈥檚 Director of Financial Aid, recognized and introduced the scholarship recipients, personally thanking GLF members for their generosity. As a token of appreciation, the university presented gifts to the Foundation鈥檚 representatives. Five scholarship recipients were in attendance to celebrate this milestone: Benjamin Sellers, Finnegan Allen, Joseph Cooper, Nyasia Jones, and Alexis Whitfield.
The event concluded with remarks from Arlena Dongilli, GLF Scholarship Program Manager, and NCWU President Dr. Evan D. Duff, who reaffirmed the university鈥檚 gratitude for this life-changing partnership.
Through this ongoing collaboration, NCWU and the Golden LEAF Foundation continue to empower students, foster academic achievement, and invest in the future of North Carolina鈥檚 workforce.
Bishops Bond with Donors
麻豆原创 (NCWU) welcomed their generous donors for a time to fellowship, dine and meet face-to-face the students whose lives they are making a difference in. The Battling Bishop Brunch Scholarship Appreciation event was held on Thursday, February 27in the Dunn Center on campus.
In attendance were several sponsors, including Gold Sponsor North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church. The brunch began with a warm welcome from Seth Badders, NCWU Junior majoring in Biology. With a passion for serving others, Seth is involved in multiple clubs and organizations including Student Government Association (SGA), Disc Golf Club, Psychology Club, Nu Gamma Phi, and is also a Resident Assistant (RA). Eddie McKoy III 鈥85, Former NCWU Basketball Player and Don Scalf Scholarship Recipient, introduced the Key Note Guest Speaker.
Jeff Hood 鈥84, NCWU Sports Hall of Fame Inductee and CEO for Hoodies House of Hope for Youth Charitable Organization, was the guest speaker. Hood has been involved with several youth related causes for more than 35 years. A native of Queens, NY and a graduate of North Carolina Wesleyan College where he received a BA Degree. In September 2007, Jeff was inducted into the N.C. Wesleyan Sports Hall of Fame after having completed a stellar basketball career. In 2018, Jeff was recognized by the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets as their Tissot Gift of Time Community Service Person of the Year. He was also Honored and Recognized as a “Made Man” of Charlotte, NC. In 2019 NOBLE recognized Jeff as their Civil Rights Justice by Action for Youth of the Year Award. Jeff is married to Gloria Sledge Hood and together have a wonderful daughter named Maya.
In his speech, Hood shares his journey of overcoming financial challenges to attend college, emphasizing the importance of scholarships, grants, and work-study programs. He recounts memorable experiences, such as guarding diplomas the night before graduation, highlighting the lengths he went to achieve his goals. He urged scholarship recipients to appreciate the support they receive and to be grateful to donors. He underscored the role of faith in his life, drawing parallels to the biblical story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Reflecting on his upbringing in a tough neighborhood, he discussed his determination to succeed and his initial struggles with racism, unfamiliar environments, and the pressure of being the first in his family to attend college. Despite these challenges, he found support and mentorship from Coach McCarthy and others, which helped him persevere. Hood emphasized the importance of resilience, the impact of receiving love and care from people different from himself, and the significance of giving back to support the next generation. He shared his commitment to youth programs and mentoring, encouraging young people to keep their faith and reminding donors of the impact of their contributions.
Vice President of Advancement, Mark Hinson, expressed his gratitude by saying, 鈥淭o our scholarship recipients, know that those who invest in your education believe in your potential. Honor this opportunity with dedication and, when the time comes, we encourage you to pay it forward to help others.鈥
Acknowledgement of the Scholarship Donors and Recipients was conducted by NC Wesleyan Senior, Lovely Thornton. She is majoring in Elementary Education with a minor in Psychology. Preceding the presentation was a beautiful singing of the Alma Mater by Latisha Scott 鈥06 who is currently working on her debut album. Senior Matthew Tiller, who is double majoring in English and Psychology, presented ways to give. Tiller is actively involved in leadership and service on campus through his membership of Omicron Delta Kappa, Student Government Association (SGA), and the University Honor Board.
The brunch was concluded by NCWU President, Dr. Evan D. Duff, reinforcing the university鈥檚 commitment to student success and the power of philanthropy in shaping their futures.
Bishops Explore Exergaming
Students at 麻豆原创 are taking an innovative approach to understanding physical activity behavior in Dr. Shannon Crowley鈥檚 Exercise Psychology class. In this class, Dr. Crowley, Associate Professor of Public Health and Director of the MPH program, leads Public Health, Exercise Science, and Psychology students in exploring psychological theories that help predict and influence health-oriented physical activity behaviors. The course also introduces cutting-edge strategies to promote physical activity, particularly among populations that may struggle with traditional exercise routines. This is particularly important, considering that less than half of U.S. adults meet the minimum physical activity recommendations for health.
One of the most popular and engaging topics in the course is Exergaming鈥攁 dynamic concept that integrates physical activity into interactive gameplay. This method offers an exciting alternative for individuals who may not enjoy conventional workouts while still reaping the benefits of movement and exercise.
Beyond theoretical discussions, students actively participate in Exergaming sessions using virtual reality headsets, adding an experiential learning component to the class. These hands-on sessions are made possible through a partnership with Dr. Ayra Sundbom, Visiting Assistant Professor of Education and Director of Instructional Technology, further reinforcing the University鈥檚 commitment to incorporating technology-driven learning experiences into the curriculum.
By merging psychology, technology, and exercise, Dr. Crowley鈥檚 students are gaining firsthand insight into how innovation can reshape the future of fitness and health behavior interventions.
NCWU Biology Students are Published
North Carolina Wesleyan University (NCWU) proudly celebrates the continued success of its Biology Department students, who are gaining recognition in the scientific community through published research. Every student who completed BIO325 in Spring 2022, 2023, and 2024 has been published or is under review for publication, showcasing their hands-on experience in experimental design and scientific writing. This practical approach equips students with real-world research skills and prepares them for future scientific endeavors.
鈥淥ur new undergraduate coauthors have achieved remarkable success, and we鈥檙e excited to see what they do next,鈥 said Dr. Joe Lane, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. 鈥淯ndergraduate research is a cornerstone of the Wesleyan experience, and our faculty are among the best at guiding students to produce meaningful work.鈥
Most recently, seven students coauthored two studies on the effects of pharmaceuticals and microplastics on Physella acuta, a freshwater snail. These studies were conducted in the BIO325 Environmental Science Lab:

鈥淲atching students grow into published researchers is incredibly rewarding,鈥 said Dr. Daniel Elias, Associate Professor and Program Coordinator of Environmental Science. 鈥淓very group since 2022 has contributed valuable insights to the field.鈥
For the students, this experience is more than just an academic achievement鈥攊t鈥檚 an opportunity to make a lasting impact.
鈥淭his paper being published means a lot for my future career and my passion for understanding possible human risks from environmental contaminants,鈥 said Morena Funoy Sayar, a 2025 graduate. 鈥淚 hope this article inspires other scientists to continue researching the effects of microplastics and pharmaceuticals on both the environment and human health.鈥
Chloe Lynch, a 2026 graduate, echoed this sentiment: 鈥淭he most rewarding part of this project was having the opportunity to grow as a researcher and contribute to science. Getting my work published was validation of all the time and effort we put into it. It鈥檚 exciting to know our research could spark further discussions and future studies.鈥

NCWU Announces New Prelicensure BSN Program
麻豆原创 (NCWU) is proud to announce the expansion of its Nursing Program with the addition of a Prelicensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. This comprehensive four-year program is set to welcome its first cohort of students in August 2025, with applications being accepted from February 1 to May 1, 2025. Admission decisions will be finalized by June 1, paving the way for selected students to begin in the fall semester.
The new 4-year program is designed to provide a seamless educational pathway for aspiring nurses. Freshman and sophomore years will focus on completing prerequisites and general education requirements. Students will then apply for admission to the nursing program at the end of their sophomore year. Upon acceptance, students will dedicate their junior and senior years to nursing-specific coursework and clinical experiences. Transfer students are also welcome to apply, with the flexibility to complete prerequisite courses at other institutions before transferring to NCWU.
Wesleyan鈥檚 current RN-to-BSN program is nationally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and the university intends to seek accreditation for the new prelicensure program as well. Entirely donor-funded through partnerships with local and state organizations, the program reflects a strong investment from the surrounding community in its success.
Leading the initiative are Dr. Crystal Ostheim, DNP, RN, FNP-BC, BP-C, CNE, Director of Nursing Programs, and Dr. Lesley Gillian McGraw, DNP, RN, CNE, Prelicensure BSN Program Director. Additionally, two experienced nursing educators will join the team starting February 1, further bolstering the program’s academic and clinical expertise.
The new nursing program will utilize NCWU’s state-of-the-art simulation and skills lab, featuring high-fidelity and medium-fidelity simulation manikins, task trainers, and a mock hospital room. These facilities are designed to provide students with hands-on learning experiences in a realistic clinical environment. The program also boasts advanced classroom technology, group study rooms, and flexible lab access for students who wish to hone their skills further. To enhance clinical simulation experiences, the program will incorporate cutting-edge reality and AI technology.
Grounded in creativity and innovation, NCWU’s Prelicensure BSN program is tailored to accommodate diverse learning styles, making the educational experience both engaging and realistic.

2. Need to Make Changes?
If you made a mistake on your FAFSA, you will need to log back in at聽聽and follow the directions to correct your mistake.聽 Please submit your corrections as soon as possible so that you will receive an accurate financial aid award letter.
3. Understand Your Award Letter
Once our Financial Aid Office receives your FAFSA and your Admissions information, you will receive a Financial Aid Award letter which breaks down the types of financial aid for which you qualify.聽 The letter will also include your Financial Aid Advisor鈥檚 name, email address and phone number. Teacher Education Pinning Ceremony
麻豆原创 (NCWU) hosted its annual Fall Symposium on November 11 at The Dunn Center, featuring the much-anticipated Pinning Ceremony for its Education Candidates. This meaningful event symbolizes the beginning of the candidates鈥 journey into the teaching profession, as they receive their education pins and certificates, marking their official entry into the Teacher Education Program.
The Pinning Ceremony serves as both a rite of passage and a testament to the candidates鈥 commitment to a career in education. It celebrates their dedication to lifelong learning while highlighting the rigorous standards required for admission to the program. To be pinned, candidates must meet several requirements, including passing the Praxis Core Pre-Professional Skills Test, maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher, successfully completing an interview with the Teacher Education Council, securing two positive recommendations, and submitting a well-crafted essay.
The ceremony featured inspiring contributions from faculty, students, and special guests. Jenna Pilkenton began with a stirring rendition of the National Anthem, followed by an Invocation led by Jordan Contreras. Ivy Chelagat delivered a heartfelt poem, Teaching Matters, capturing the significance of the teaching profession. Dr. Joe Lane, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, offered a warm welcome, and SNCAE President Emma Mosley shared the Occasion address. In her address, Ms. Hopkins emphasized the importance of intentionality in the teaching profession, outlining three key principles for educators to uphold:

- Lifelong Learning 鈥 Remaining committed to personal and professional growth to adapt and thrive in an ever-evolving educational landscape.
